When choosing between Canon and Sony for beginner photographers, both brands excel in different areas. Canon is generally more beginner-friendly, with intuitive interfaces, simpler menus, and affordable entry-level options like the EOS Rebel series or EOS R10. Their color science is praised for vibrant results, particularly in portraits, and they offer a wide selection of budget-friendly lenses. Sony, on the other hand, provides superior autofocus performance, better low-light capabilities, and more advanced video features in models like the a6400 or a6600. Their mirrorless designs are compact and lightweight, but their menus can be more technical, and lens options tend to be pricier.
For a beginner prioritizing ease of use, affordability, and still photography, Canon is the stronger choice. If video performance, future-proofing, or compactness is a priority, Sony may be preferable—though with a steeper learning curve. Trying both in-store can help determine which system feels more comfortable.
