What's healthier, butter or olive oil?
High agreement — the answer is well-supported across models.
Models agree on
- ✓Olive oil is healthier than butter due to its monounsaturated fats
- ✓Butter is high in saturated fat, which raises LDL cholesterol
- ✓Olive oil contains beneficial nutrients (polyphenols, vitamins) absent in butter
- ✓Olive oil supports heart health and weight management better than butter
Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil, is significantly healthier than butter due to its superior fat composition and nutritional benefits. Here's why:
- ·
Fat Composition: Olive oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL cholesterol. Butter contains predominantly saturated fats, which elevate LDL levels and increase cardiovascular risk.
- ·
Nutrients & Health Benefits: Olive oil contains polyphenols, vitamins (A, E, D, K), and beta-carotene, offering anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties. Butter lacks these nutrients and has fewer documented health advantages.
- ·
Weight & Cholesterol Impact: Studies link olive oil to reduced weight gain over time, while butter consumption correlates with higher LDL cholesterol levels and potential weight gain.
- ·
Moderation Matters: Both oils are calorie-dense, but olive oil is the clear choice for daily use. Butter can be enjoyed occasionally but lacks olive oil’s broad health benefits.
